General information
Founded in 1982, West Buckland Pre-School is a community-based charity offering pre-school education and play opportunities to children from 2 to 5 years of age. We run the group in West Buckland Village Hall from 9.00am to 2.45pm on Mondays and Fridays, and from 9.00am to 12.30pm* on Tuesdays.
* An afternoon session is available for children rising 5 (who will be attending primary school in the following year). This session will be available at a small extra cost to the parent/guardian. Sessions will be used to introduce your child to the local primary school.
The pre-school is registered on the Early Years Register and a maximum of 25 children may attend the group at any one time.
The pre-school supports children with special educational needs.
The setting provides funded early years education for 2, 3 and 4 year olds. 2 year old funding is available if you meet the criteria and funding is available for all children the term after their 3rd Birthday.
Through their attendance we aim to help the children continue their development started by their parents/guardians, encourage independence and help prepare them for full time education.
We aim to use our outdoor space as much as possible throughout the year and we ask that children bring along a named pair of welly boots to keep at the pre-school. We enjoy exploring the countryside with the children and plan lots of outdoor activities.
The pre-school is a member of the Pre-School Learning Alliance which keeps staff in touch with new thinking regarding pre-school education.
Written policies have been set out to cover all major aspects of the pre-school. These are available for parents/guardians to read at any time and we would encourage you to read them before your child joins the group or soon after. Policies are reviewed regularly - parents/guardians comments are welcomed.
The pre-school management is overseen by a small committee of parents/guardians who have volunteered to be trustees. Day-to-day management and running falls to our dedicated staff members. We welcome parents/guardians to join our committee, which meet once a month to discuss the running of the pre-school and fundraising.
In our last OFSTED inspection on 18th January 2016, we were awarded GOOD in all areas and the inspector highlighted these significant strengths:
"Staff are caring and friendly, and children respond positively to their gentle humour. This helps children feel secure and effectively promotes their emotional well being.
Children enjoy their play. They become absorbed in activities which motivate and interest them and support their future learning skills. Staff work effectively together as a team and frequently reflect on their practice.
Staff actively reinforce children's comments and sensitively question their ideas, extending their thinking and discussion."
